Karkamış Dam and HEPP

The Karkamış Dam and HEPP is located on the Euphrates River 4,5 km from the Syrian border. Constructed as a clay-core earthfill dam, the Karkamış Dam and HEPP is a very important project being the first application of run of river type HEPP in Turkey. The Karkamış Dam and HEPP is the second unit in the Border Euphrates Project, which constitutes one part of the Southeast Anatolian Project. The power plant has installed capacity of 189 MW with an electricity production target of 652,5 GWh. When the protective embankments on the right and left shore of the reservoir for this electrical power generating dam were built, the 336-meter level of the lake was raised to an operational level of 340 meters. The purpose was to protect the residential area and 433 hectares of farmland below the lake. The project was completed by a consortium including Yüksel İnşaat A.Ş.
