Karkamış Dam and HEPP is the second unit of the lower Projects
that comprises a part of the South-eastern Anatolia Project, and it’s
the first application implemented in Turkey as a river plant which is clay
cored fill type at 4.5 km. distance to the Syrian Border on the Euphrates
River. The plant has an installed capacity of 189 MW and aims to produce 652.5
GWh of power annually. Left and right bank protection dykes of the reservoir
have also been designed to protect public settlements and 433 hectare agricultural
lands by which reservoir elevation is raised up from 336 m. to 340 m. Karkamis
Dam and HEPP, which was constructed by Yüksel Construction and international
consortium partners (hydro-mechanical works and civil construction by Yüksel
and Temelsu; electro-mechanical works by the Austrian consortium members Va
Tech Elin, Voith Hydro, Verbundplan), has a crest elevation of 344 m., crest
length of 1,647 m. and total fill volume of 2,100,000 m³. Its six bulb
type turbines have a capacity of 32 MW each.
